NYHOI Paper

They control what you do, what you say, the way you look, the way you drive, the way you view some people you have never meet and even the way you feel... Cameras. There is nothing a camera can’t capture.
The danger of a camera is once a moment is captured it can be replayed as many times as any viewer desires and shared with others around the world via YouTube. We are becoming a generation of instant replay who is constantly living in the past. Josh Harris said, “lions and tigers were once kings of the jungle and now they are in zoos the same thing will happen to us”. I think this is very true if you compare zoo cages where you only see a small part of the big picture and do not see what is happening behinds the walls of the cell. The same is true with YouTube. We are put into a small box on the computer screen, like a cage, and we see only what is shown in that little box.
Since we only see pieces of the puzzle, we don’t see things like make-up artists, picture and video editing, and all the takes before that perfect scene or picture. What we see is the perfect final project. Then we compare ourselves to the airbrushed models, even though the models rarely look the way they do in pictures. When we see how great celebrities look in pictures, we feel as if we need to look just “as good” in our own pictures. Women constantly undergo painful procedures just to look more like what the world is tell them is beautiful. Natural is completely out and everyone wants to look like someone else. This comparing is making us a more materialistic and narcissistic generation as we search through hundreds, if not thousands, of pictures of ourselves on Facebook to make sure we are “measuring up”. This is causing more wants and less happiness.
We have the power to watch anything we want on YouTube. The majority of time is spent entertaining ourselves instead of making ties around the world or helping others. Videos such as Nada’s death that was filmed during an Iranian rebellion were posted all over YouTube and Facebook, but had less hits then the hide your wife hide your kids video and were only broadcasted on the news a few times. The news learns from it’s viewers and instead of constantly keeping us up dated with important matters they are throwing in news stories that have nothing to with our daily lives which keep us entertained and distracted.
So the ending question that I am leaving you with or my NYHOI is not if the media and cameras are controlling us, because they obviously are, but how are they controlling us? Are we becoming more connected to the world or are we only looking to be entertained.

Script

-Music fades in... Smile your on candid Camera, but really everyday you are on camera whether you know it or not
-flash to celebrities who are constantly followed by the paparazzi, some trying to hide some ignore the cameras, but whatever choice they make, they will be in the magazines tomorrow.
-What we see from the pictures we believe
-Flash to people who are acting like someone else on camera (man dressed like woman)
-What is real?
-The media tells us what to believe (flash to beauty commercial)
-Our focus is on stupid irrelevant things in the world like what shoes so and so wore to the Oscars and someone saw a leprechaun (news story) so the news reports more on that than real matters
-We have the power to show the world what we are passionate with our cameras (flash to the revolution) and we have the power to change the world and start a revolution
-End of video leaves with this question "Will you do something to change the world, or will you just change the channel"

NYHOI about the world of Cameras

They control what you do, what you say, the way you look, the way you drive, the way you view some people you have never meet and even the way you feel... Cameras. They are everywhere from Surveillance Cameras to phone cameras and at any time they can be used in the best or worst ways. Many people are famous because the cameras are constantly on them watching every move they make so their audiences will be contentiously updated on celebrities lives. Cameras also control the way we look back on our lives to see what we were like years ago. But recently the biggest issues with cameras hitting the news is the Egyptian revolution. Sure twitter, facebook and bloggers all contributed a great amount to this revolution, but with our generation, word can only go so far. We are a generation of "seeing is believing" and without camera footage and pictures of the determined protesters, police and beaten men, the audience on the other side of the world has less interest. So what do the protesters do for the other side of the world that is watching from the web or TV? They create huge commotions in front of the camera to get more viewers to hear what they have to say. While more and more people are fighting to be seen around the world for what they believe in, more and more people are being put in danger. News reporters being beaten, government buildings set on fire, cameras being smashed, all because of the presents of cameras surrounding people with strong beliefs.
So how does this connect to anything? Well if you look into it cameras connect to almost everything. Our world today is being to be run by the camera and in few years time it will be so widespread no one will have a voice who doesn't have a camera. So here is my NYHOI, if we are going to use cameras, which are not inherently good or bad, we need to focus on how we can contribute to helping the world because we are all so connected. We can see what is going on around the world (even though it is through a small square) and we are able to relate to others easier. So what we need to do is first, understand how to use the technology that comes with having a camera. Second, get involved with projects that help with connecting with other people around the world. And third once you are connected help change the world. All you need is motivation and a camera.

What my plans are for my video

Well I have been thinking about looking more into cases where people were beaten or killed on camera such as Neda. I will also be adding a lot of news broad casts and how news reporters are being treated. From what I find there, I will compare to how cameras are helping the awareness of events that are happening around the world that not many people knew of before (such as invisible children) and letting the public see for themselves. Mainly the pros and cons of the camera on our generation and how that plays into effect in the Egyptian revolution.

Video Trailer and Idea

Cameras are changing the world in more ways then one realizes everyday. The cameras in Egypt capturing images are (in my opinion) the strongest force driving the revolution. People from around the world are sitting down and watching what is happening across the globe, but what they don't realize is that what they are seeing is completely bias. None of the people who are pushing for a revolution are going to calmly look at a camera and talk to it as if they were calming putting their child to sleep. Instead they are going to yell at the camera, do things in front of it that they might not do if few people were watching. They are hyping up their actions in front of the camera because they know the whole world is watching them and when they see the extreme measures they are taking they hope to inspire the viewers to do the same. Recently more reporters are being attacked and camera smashed. People who are on the other side of the revolution don't want to be seen by the world because they are scared so they have started making life for the reporters hell. In some parts of Egypt they aren't letting people buildings with a camera because they are afraid violence will break out.
Though cameras are causing all kinds of violence, they still can be used to save lives. The rest of my ideas for my project will remain a surprise. But, here is my trailer to get you excited for the final video...

Kenya Print Media

Protestant missionaries came to Kenya and taught new converts how to read and write so that they could read the bible for themselves. After learning how to read and write, they took it further and published things for themselves such as newspapers and magazines. Even today the church is still involved in some magazine publishing in Kenya.

First newspaper in Kenya refugee camp

Youth from Kenya's refugee camp came together and started a newspaper. There is very little technology in this area of Africa and the idea of the first newspaper created and sold by the youth is an exciting.
