NYHOI Paper

They control what you do, what you say, the way you look, the way you drive, the way you view some people you have never meet and even the way you feel... Cameras. There is nothing a camera can’t capture.
The danger of a camera is once a moment is captured it can be replayed as many times as any viewer desires and shared with others around the world via YouTube. We are becoming a generation of instant replay who is constantly living in the past. Josh Harris said, “lions and tigers were once kings of the jungle and now they are in zoos the same thing will happen to us”. I think this is very true if you compare zoo cages where you only see a small part of the big picture and do not see what is happening behinds the walls of the cell. The same is true with YouTube. We are put into a small box on the computer screen, like a cage, and we see only what is shown in that little box.
Since we only see pieces of the puzzle, we don’t see things like make-up artists, picture and video editing, and all the takes before that perfect scene or picture. What we see is the perfect final project. Then we compare ourselves to the airbrushed models, even though the models rarely look the way they do in pictures. When we see how great celebrities look in pictures, we feel as if we need to look just “as good” in our own pictures. Women constantly undergo painful procedures just to look more like what the world is tell them is beautiful. Natural is completely out and everyone wants to look like someone else. This comparing is making us a more materialistic and narcissistic generation as we search through hundreds, if not thousands, of pictures of ourselves on Facebook to make sure we are “measuring up”. This is causing more wants and less happiness.
We have the power to watch anything we want on YouTube. The majority of time is spent entertaining ourselves instead of making ties around the world or helping others. Videos such as Nada’s death that was filmed during an Iranian rebellion were posted all over YouTube and Facebook, but had less hits then the hide your wife hide your kids video and were only broadcasted on the news a few times. The news learns from it’s viewers and instead of constantly keeping us up dated with important matters they are throwing in news stories that have nothing to with our daily lives which keep us entertained and distracted.
So the ending question that I am leaving you with or my NYHOI is not if the media and cameras are controlling us, because they obviously are, but how are they controlling us? Are we becoming more connected to the world or are we only looking to be entertained.

-The decrease in price and increase in quality of consumer video cameras, and the integration of cameras into mobile phones, have greatly expanded the set of people who can create audiovisual content, while the rise of publishing platforms like Blogger and YouTube makes it at least theoretically possible that amateur media authors could reach a global audience.
